Young wineland is getting quite skilled playing the trombone. We've seen Trombone Shorty. Preservation Hall Jazz Band is coming to Portland, but it is 21+, bummer. Any other trombonists that we should catch in concert or listen to? He's really into jazz and also likes bands that bring the funk with a brass section.

Another couple bands I'll have to dig out of the record stash. Not my first go to's, but as I've mentioned, I'd like him to hear many flavors of playing so he can settle into his own.

These groups are all Beep* certified. I've seen them all live, some several times. Hopefully young master wineland can find something to his liking.

That Count Basie will be a good one for him. We'll have to explore some of your other picks. Of course he has been exposed to James Brown. Elbow was kind enough to send me some concerts of his years ago. Still in heavy rotation at our house.

Karl & DDBB are great. I got sidetracked at work looking up tour schedules to see if they were going to be anywhere near this summer. The boy and I might have a roadtrip in our near future.

I've always liked Bruce Fowler's playing (mostly have listened to him on Zappa albums):

Also always enjoyed Steve Turre when he'd play on SNL:

Dang, Fowler has quite the resume. I haven't ever gotten bit by the Zappa bug, but maybe young wineland will.

I have to check out this Steve Turre guy. He plays seashells and conchs according to wiki. And the list of sideman sessions is a mile long with a ton of his own recordings. .

Funny. His two trombone friends were over and in a quick slip of the tongue I called them the boners. I cracked up but they weren't to sure of it. Since then I've heard them refer to their group as that.

Jazz Titans for sure. Wynton has become the patriarch of jazz. Maybe patriarch is to high of a word, he might need to be older for that title, but spokesman/face of jazz for sure. Saving this for the weekend when we can focus our attention on it.

Great LPs on Blue Note and Actuel. Also played with Shepp and others.

"Aco Dei de Madrugada" (BYG Actuel, 1969) is easily in my top ten fave jazz LPs. It's the sound of a perfect summer day in the park, with the smell of grass (both kinds) wafting past on a gentle breeze.

For whatever reason, nobody's uploaded a rip to YouTube. But his two early LPs for Blue Note and his other LP on Actual ("New Africa") can be streamed if you like. Those are also great, but different from "Aco Dei de Madrugada."

Cool, I'll have him do some research. I am mainly wanting him to find his own style by getting a broad range of artists. Who knows who he will cling on to. The journey is the important part.

Also the late Porky Cohen who played with my all time favorite live band ever, Roomful of Blues.

Fred Wesley! Doesn't get much funkier than him -- he was James Brown's bandleader (the JB's) before defecting to Parliament! "Pass the Peas" is a good start, but most JB's collections have plenty have great trombone solos.

and +1 for any of the many JJ Johnson & Kai Winding recordings. If a double-trombone band isn't enough, they have one album called "Jay & Kai +6" with half a dozen more trombones added to the mix... maybe too much of a good thing, but hey, maybe not if you're a trombone player.

Just to be sure...

There's Robin Eubanks (brother of guitarist, Kevin ), who sometimes plays with bassist Dave Holland. And Curtis Fuller (who put in a really nice solo on Coltrane's legendary 'Blue Train') is apparently still active at 80+ years of age.

And the albums of J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding (sometimes even paired together).

I can't attest to any of his solo efforts, as I haven't heard them; however, anything with Dave Holland's name attached is sure to be, at the very least, not bad. But if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't hesitate to see Robin sans DH live.
